Spain's Joan Horrach emerged from a 15-man breakaway group to win the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Livorno to Sestri Levante yesterday.

The Caisse d'Epargne rider surged to the front in the final kilometre to win by five seconds ahead of Addy Engels of the Netherlands and Italy's Emanuele Sella who was third in the same time. Italy's Ivan Basso, seven minutes behind Horrach, retained the overall lead.

The Giro heads into the Italian Alps today with the 218-kms 13th stage from Alessandria to La Thuile in the Val d'Aosta region.
