These 12 artworks created by local students are the finalists selected by an international panel of judges for the inaugural Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize for Malta and Gozo. A total of 35 entries were submitted to the competition by students from 11 local secondary schools.

The works are currently being exhibited at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Valletta.

From Saturday, the exhibition will move to The Point shopping mall in Sliema, until March 11.

The public is invited to visit the exhibition and to vote for their favourite work either by using the voting slips provided at the exhibition venues or by voting online at the website below.

The students submitting the top three winning artworks will be awarded monetary prizes for themselves and their schools, the top prize being €500 for the student and €2,000 for the school’s art department. The prizes will be presented at an award ceremony at the Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta, on March 22.

The competition aims to celebrate the importance of art in the education system and recognise the quality of work that can be produced by local students. It was launched by the Sovereign Art Foundation, a charity established in 2003 in Hong Kong by Howard Bilton that funds projects using art as education, rehabilitation and therapy for disadvantaged children throughout the world. It now runs students’ prizes in Hong Kong, Singapore, Mauritius, Bahrain, Portugal, Malta, the Isle of Man and Guernsey.
