According to statistics, the number of motor vehicles on our roads is astronomical, so one would expect the ministry responsible for transport to say how the government could alleviate the daily traffic problems we face. Sadly, it is not the case.

Primarily, the 60kph speed limit ought to be increased to 70 or 80kph. It is very easy for a motorist to reach the speed of 60kph, even when solely focusing on the driving. More often than not, drivers going at between 60 and 70kph are penalised, because of the speed cameras, and lose three points. Is this fair?

Seriously, Transport Malta should change their mentality and promote a new speed to help avoid the horrendous traffic jams we are witnessing first hand.  Two other items that concern Transport Malta.

A letter of mine on this newspaper some weeks ago criticised Transport Malta for changing the location of the Balluta bus stop. Several times a day, with the back end of the bus sticking out into the lane, traffic on both sides comes to a halt. What brainbox thought this up? Any reaction from Transport Malta? None at all.

We are now in the summer months and traffic has increased considerably, yet, Transport Malta stands fast and does nothing.

Since Triq Ross, St Julian’s has now been given a new coat of tarmac, the zebra crossing is gone. I sincerely hope that when Transport Malta decide to have it painted again, it will choose the area close to the offices of Frank Salt and just after Triq Paceville. In that manner, pedestrians will not stop the traffic going into Triq Paceville, thus contributing to a traffic jam just by the roundabout.
