The number of part-timers who felt underemployed stood at 5,000 last year, far below the EU average, figures out yesterday showed.

While Malta’s part-timers made up 16 per cent of the workforce, 5,000 of them or 15 per cent wished to work more hours and were available to do so, according to Eurostat, the EU statistical agency.

Across the EU 22 per cent of part-timers felt underemployed.

In Malta 61 per cent of part-timers who felt underemployed were women, which was slightly below the EU average of 67 per cent.

The statistics also showed there were 3,000 people available to work in Malta but were not seeking employment, such as discouraged job seekers.

Among the 44 million people in the EU working part-time last year, 10 million were under-employed.
