A young soldier who lived for his job in the army is fighting for his life after injuring himself during military training this morning.

The soldier, 19-year-old Matthew Psaila of Ta' Xbiex, who took up his career in the army as soon as he obtained his "A" levels was seriously injured after finding himself in difficulties during training at the Chadwick Lakes.

The soldier was first given first aid by his colleagues but was then taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment.

The training was being undertaken by the C (Special Duties) Company, 1 Reg AFM.

A magisterial inquiry is being held.
