A former Nato peacekeeper was handed a suspended jail term after admitting badly injuring a man who had caught him trying to rob his van in Paceville.

The incident happened in January when Finnish soldier Tatu Antero Oksanen, 33, who had served in Kosovo, was on holiday in Malta.The victim was hit with a broken bottle and needed 12 stitches to his face.Mr Oksanen had initially pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit sentenced Mr Oksanen to one year in prison, suspended for two years. Lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia were defence counsel. Lawyer Michael Sciriha appeared parte civile for the victim.Police Inspector Elton Talianab prosecuted.
