Schemes and feed-in tariffs for private investment in solar energy will continue to be released on a rolling basis, according to a joint statement released by the Energy Ministry and Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises, GRTU.

“Discussions between the GRTU and ministry are under way related to the development of a public private partnership for solar energy that will enable multiple service providers to have the opportunity to invest in the sector,” they said.

The two sides welcomed the announcement made by the EU Funds Parliamentary Secretary that a new scheme for domestic feed-in tariffs with a capital grant will be issued in the coming weeks.

The ministry said that the renewable energy mix planned for 2020 had an increased focus on solar energy to substitute the wind energy planned by the previous administration.

The solar energy component for 2020 has been increased from 28 MWp to an estimated 192MWp.

“Enemalta in collaboration with Shanghai Electric Power will develop a pilot project in Malta (circa 10 MWp) that will serve as a showcase for their joint-European business. The remaining 182 MWp will offer significant opportunities for the private sector,” the ministry said.
