A proposal to financially help operators of solar and wind energy installations has been approved by the European Commission.

The scheme, which has received a budget allocation of €140 million for the 2016-2020 period, would provide operators with a premium payment over-and-above the market price. Onshore wind developers would also be able to tender for support if an eligible site receives development consent during the scheme's lifetime.

According to EU renewable energy targets, Malta must generate at least 10 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. Malta currently generates just 4 per cent of its energy from such sources, with four years to go before the 2020 deadline.

In its decision, the Commission found that the measures did not violate state aid rules and would encourage the deployment of renewable energy projects and help Malta reach its 10 per cent 2020 target.

The Commission also approved similar plans presented by the Luxembourg government.
