The new open theatre on the site of the old opera house in Valletta will have a soft opening on December 15 when it hosts a programme of Christmas entertainment which will continue till December 24.

Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt said today during a tour of the theatre that most infrastructural work on the site is ready and the hoardings will come down soon.  The stage, theatre decking and seating are ready. So are the backstage rooms, but some lighting and equipment still has to be installed. The whole project will be complete by April or May, "on time and on budget," the minister said.

The Christmas programme will be presented by the ministry in association with the Valletta business community and will feature buskers, bands, parades and other entrainment.

Shows will be presented between 10 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. and  5 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. (see programme on pdf below)

There is seating for 900. Entrance is free.

Dr Gatt also pointed out that the Barrakka lift will be inaugurated in the coming weeks and the new car park on the Floriana ground is also ready. Prices have been reduced at the Blata l-Bajda car park and entrance and parking in Valletta is free after 4.30 p.m. during the Christmas period.
