Social Solidarity Minister Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca this morning met the General Workers’ Union in one of a series of meetings the government is holding with trade unions and workers with a view to put together a strategy to combat poverty and social exclusion.

Notary Coleiro Preca said the government was committed to eradicate precarious work, which not only affected the economy but also people’s quality of life.

GWU general secretary Tony Zarb thanked the minister for her commitment and said that precarious employment was just one of many social issues of concern to the union.

Other issues included the need for the minimum pension to be capped at 60 per cent of the median wage, tackling abuse of social benefits and the revision of a law on the abuse of pensioners.
