A former social assistant admitted in court today that she robbed an elderly man of €1,250 after stealing his debit card and PIN number.

The woman, who used to be employed by the Department for Care for the Elderly, admitted to having made three withdraws from an account belonging to Giuseppe Calleja, 86 of Tarxien. She worked for him as a helper.

Mr Calleja noticed that the money was missing when he received a bank statement. He reported the matter to the police and the woman, Rita Busuttil, immediately returned the money.

Mr Calleja said he has forgiven her.

She was conditionally discharged and banned from working in the public service. She also received a perpetual interdiction.
