AQUILINA. On January 9, at St James Capua Hospital, Sliema, RICHARD, aged 52, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his beloved wife Nikki, his devoted sister Rosary and his brothers Mario and his wife Phyllis and Edward and his wife Lydia, his nieces Angel, Karen and their respective families. VELLA. On January 9, at St James Capua Hospital, Sliema, HELEN née Mizzi, beloved wife, mother and grandmother of Derek, Julia, Lisa, Gabrielle and Victoria. She will also be sadly missed by her sisters and brothers Lola, Bertie, Tony, Sophie and Rita, widow of her brother Arthur, and her in-laws Gloria, Kenneth, James, Mark and Adrian, and all their respective spouses, her nephews, nieces and many friends. Mepa Seminar On GMOs

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority will be holding a one-day seminar on genetically modified organisms at the Waterfront Hotel, Gzira, tomorrow from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The seminar aims to increase awareness on GMOs and the associated local, EU and international legal obligations.

Burger King Valletta Restaurant has won the award for being the Best Overall Restaurant in the Staff Incentive Scheme sponsored by Coca-Cola. The scheme runs from June to September. Julie Mercieca was declared Best Overall Crew Member. The three runners-up were Tiziana Borg from Burger King Valletta; Keith Brincat from Burger King Paceville and Lara Bellizzi from Burger King Sliema.

Measuring Instruments Directive

The Ministry for Competitiveness and Communications, through the Consumer and Industrial Goods Directorate of the Malta Standards Authority, has launched two consultation documents (ICD 01/2006 and ICD 01/2006a) on the implementation of the Measuring Instruments Directive.

The directive applies to the following 10 categories of measuring instruments: water meters; gas meters; active electrical energy meters; heat meters; continuous and dynamic measurement of quantities of liquids other than water; automatic weighing instruments; taximeters; material measures (i.e. measures of length and volume); dimensional measuring instruments (i.e. measures of length, area and space occupied by a solid); and exhaust gas analysers.

The directive will come into force on October 30.

Any comments should reach the Consumer and Industrial Goods Directorate as follows: ICD 01/2006 by January 27 and ICD 01/2006a by March 10.

Day Retreat

The Mir prayer group together with Fr Hayden Williams will hold a day retreat on February 5 between 9 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. at the Zebbug Retreat House of the Community of Sisters, Daughters of Our Lady of the Eucharist.
