Appreciation - Alfred Mallia

Mark A. Guillaumier, CEO, Malta Stock Exchange, writes:

I was away on Exchange business when news of Alfred Mallia's passing away reached me over the phone. My mind went back to the times when we were together in Brussels, Milan or Cairo, of his unstinting efforts to get new business for the Exchange, to see it grow and develop under his leadership.

Mr Mallia was the Exchange chairman for seven years and during this time I got to know the qualities of the man, his acute sense of duty as chairman, his respect for his colleagues, his love and affection for his family, his love for life and the esteem of all those who knew him.

Mr Mallia joined the Exchange in 1999, a time of difficult decisions. But he took the helm and steered the institution with a quiet resolution and vision which commanded loyalty and support from all those who were lucky enough to work with him.

Under his guidance the Exchange achieved a number of important milestones. The move to new premises and the introduction of a Code of Corporate Governance for listed companies immediately stand out as major achievements.

However, to my mind, his greatest contribution to the Exchange during his years as chairman was his constant presence, his quiet words of advice, his gentlemanly manners, his genuine concern for people. Mr Mallia stood for all these qualities. He was a gentleman.

To his beloved family all words seem futile now. It seems almost impossible that someone who has been a constant, loving presence throughout one's life, is suddenly no longer there. Time passes but memories will linger. And to Maryanne and the family, they will be memories of a loving husband and a dedicated father.
