He leaves to mourn his loss his wife Maria, née Pirotta, his children Vince and his wife Melleen, Nathalie and her husband Michael, Silvio, Monica and her husband Joe, Mario and his wife Doris, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Charles, widower of his sister Mary, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St Vincent de Paul residence today at 1.45 p.m. for the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery chapel where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m., followed by interment in the family grave. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza, Siggiewi, will be appreciated.

FARRUGIA. On January 2, at Villa Messina, Rabat, REMIG, aged 82, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his loving wife Violet, his children Anne, wife of Philip J. Cassar, David and his wife Isabella, Tanya and her husband Ivan Esposito, his beloved grandchildren Mandy and her husband Mark Galea, Andrew and his girlfriend Christine Falzon, Matthew, Ian, Alexander and Katryna, his brothers and sisters, Rose, sive Lucy Zammit, Celestina Mizzi, Ronnie Farrell and his wife Juanita, Sunnie Farrell and his wife Anna, Violet Depares and her husband Joe, Tessie Hilhorst and her husband Bert, Orea Heister and her husband Cyrus, John and his wife Jill, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. - R.I.P.

GATT. On January 1, Fr JOHN V. GATT,  SJ, aged 81, went to meet the Risen Lord comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his brethren of the Society of Jesus in Malta and India, his sister Marie Therese, widow of Paul Camilleri, his brother Joe and his wife Marie, his sister-in-law Mabel, widow of Peter Gatt, his nephews and nieces and their families, friends and many former students of St Aloysius College.
The funeral will leave Loyola House, Naxxar, today at 9 a.m. for Naxxar parish church where Mass praesente cadavere will be celebrated at 9.30 a.m. Interment will take place at the Naxxar cemetery.
May he rest in the peace of the Risen Lord.

GAUCI. On January 2, at St Luke's Hospital, MARIA, widow of Carmelo, passed peacefully away at the venerable age of 90, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her children Paul and his wife Mary Gauci, Francis and his wife Connie Gauci, Edwin and his wife Doriette Gauci, Margaret and her husband Joe Pace, Tony Gauci, Yvonne Gauci, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital tomorrow at 2 p.m. for St Mary's parish church, Attard, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2.30 p.m., followed by interment at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to St Joseph Home, St Joseph High Road, Sta Venera, will be greatly appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors. Lord grant her eternal rest.

Understanding Opera

Mro Joseph Vella will be conducting a short course, entitled Understanding Opera, at Din l-Art Helwa, 133, Melita Street, Valletta on January 17 from 9 a.m. to 12.15 p.m.

The course will provide an overview of the roots, birth and development of opera, from Monteverdi to baroque opera, pre-classical opera and romantic opera, the operas of Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Puccini and Wagner as well as the 20th century operas of Stravinsky, Britten and Strauss. Mro Vella will also focus on the triumph of the singer Castrati, the libretto, arias, opera buffa, singspiel, verismo opera in Italy, the role of the orchestra and Bel Canto.

Mro Joseph Vella has composed for a wide variety of combinations, from solo pieces to large-scale works. For the last 30 years, he has been the artistic director of the Astra Opera Theatre, in Gozo, and has been appointed the first resident conductor of the National Orchestra. He is also professor of composition at the University of Malta.

The fee for the course is Lm5 for Din l-Art Helwa members and Lm8 for non-members, including a coffee break.

Church Schools Admission

Application forms for admission to Church schools in Malta will be available from the Archbishop's Curia, in Floriana, from Monday for kindergarten children born in 2004.

Application forms for pre-grade children born in 2003 may be obtained on Tuesday while applications for Year One children born in 2002 may be collected on January 10.

The office will be open between 9 a.m. and noon and between 3 and 5 p.m. The closing dates for completed applications will be announced with the issuing of the application forms.

Church Open Day

An open day will be held at the Carmelite church and priory in Mdina on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Entrance is free but donations towards the church and priory restoration will be appreciated.

DLH Lottery Winners

The results of the annual Din l-Art Helwa Christmas lottery are as follows:

The two Air Malta return club class tickets to London were won by holder of ticket number 23305, while the Winston Hassall watercolour painting of the Bir Miftuh Chapel was won by the holder of ticket number 4701.

Holder of ticket number 9581 won a Waterman pen and a microwave oven will go to the holder of ticket 37035.

The Book Encounters With Malta will go to the holder of ticket number 40032 and the holder of ticket number 26422 has won a dinner set. A Body Shop gift pack will go to the holder of ticket number 46690.

Model shipbuilding

A course in model shipbuilding will be held at the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa from January 12.

The course, with lessons held between 6 and 8 p.m., is being organised by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and will be conducted by Joe Abela, who is the model shipbuilder and conservator at the museum.
