BORG. On January 21, at Villa Messina residence, MARIA née Farrugia, of Rabat, aged 87, widow of Guzeppi, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her son Emmanuel, her daughters Mary Anne, and Carmen and her husband George Chase, her grandchildren Ian and his wife Colette, Geraldine and her husband Conrad Attard, Benna, and Albert, her great-grandchildren Karen, Michelle, Alexandra, Rachel, Amy and Adam, her sisters Paolina, Carmen and Sandra, her brother Anthony and his wife Consiglia, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves Villa Messina residence tomorrow at 2.45 p.m. for St Dominic church, Rabat, where Mass praesente cadavere for the repose of her soul will be said at 3 p.m. followed by interment at the Santa Margerita cemetery, Rabat. No flowers by request, but donations to Dar tal-Providenza and Radju Maria will be appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.
Lord grant her eternal rest.

CESAREO. On January 20, MARIA, aged 80, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She is sadly missed by her sister Lydia, her brothers Edwin, Guido, Arthur and Saviour (Sonny) and their respective spouses, nephews and nieces, other relatives and friends. - R.I.P.
Mass praesente cadavere will be celebrated today at 8.30 a.m. at the Annunciation parish church, Balzan, followed by interment at Zabbar cemetery.

FENECH AZZOPARDI. On January 21, at St Luke's Hospital, VICTOR (president of the Republic Street Business Community Association), of Valletta residing in Sliema, aged 65, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his beloved wife Therese, his only son Cedric and his wife Marquita, his adorable grandson Gabriel, his brother Henry and his wife Grace, his sisters Marylene, widow of Joe Micallef and Elizabeth and her husband Paul Azzopardi, his sister-in-law Rose and her husband Joe Agius, nephews, nieces and numerous friends including his colleagues of the Republic Street Business Community Association.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

VELLA. On January 21, at St Luke's Hospital, VIOLET MAE, aged 86, widow of Andrew, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss her son Roman and his wife Sheila, her sister Melita, in-laws, other relatives and friends. - R.I.P.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital tomorrow at 8.30 a.m. for Ibrag church, St Andrew's, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 9 a.m. followed by interment in the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery. Talk on Chinese gardens

An illustrated talk on Chinese gardens will be held tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the China Cultural Centre in Melita Street, Valletta.

The talk will be delivered by Chris Salomone who will deal with the position and function of the Emperor and the origins of the Chinese garden.

He will also speak on the basic emblematic shapes in Chinese gardens such as the circle and square, ancient Chinese cities, and Confucius and Fascist principles, among others.

The basic principles and elements will be summed up so one can better appreciate China's gift to Malta namely The Chinese Garden, at Sta Lucija.

Mr Salomone emigrated to Australia in 1964 where he taught English and art. For several years he gave a series of lectures on Buddhist art and architecture, the Islamic aesthetic and Japanese history and culture. The talk on Chinese gardens is part of a series on aspects of gardens in China and Japan.

Cookery courses

The Institute of Tourism Studies and APS Consult Ltd will be holding cookery and food processing courses (theoretical and practical) using local agricultural produce as of January 27.

Meanwhile, the organisers informed interested professional and amateur cooks that as the number of applications for the course on the preservation of citrus fruit is about to exceed the target of 30 applications, another course is being planned. Those interested should apply even after Tuesday, which was the deadline for the applications.

New associate director at KPMG

KPMG Malta has appointed John Huber as associate director within the tax function.

Mr Huber, who joined KPMG in 1989, will be focusing on the firm's tax and people services department. Since joining KPMG, he has mainly been involved with personal tax, social security and immigration issues.
