BONNICI. On January 23, at St Luke's Hospital, MARIO (Director, MLM), aged 54, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his great loss his beloved wife Lucienne, née Vella, his daughter Corinne and his son Jean Claude, his brother Paul, his sister Marlene, his sister Jane and her husband Joseph Doublesin, Richard and his wife Alice, Anthony and his wife Marlene, Natalie and her husband Charles Pace, his father-in-law Joseph Vella, in-laws, nephews and nieces.

Carmelite Conference

The Discalced Carmelite Friars will hold a conference on Monasticism in the Holy Land and the Influence on the Origin of the Latin Hermits on Mount Carmel, by Mgr George Mifsud Montanaro at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall, Valley Road, Birkirkara on Monday at 7 p.m.

Youth Big Band In Concert

The Sliema Youth Big Band of the Sliema Philharmonic Society, under the direction of Sigmund Mifsud, will hold a concert at the Sir Temi Zammit Auditorium of the University in Msida on Sunday at 7.30 p.m.

Guest singers Claudia Faniello, Ludwig Galea, Daniel Cauchi, Louisa Wirth and Petra Micallef will interpret songs such as Madonna's You'll See, Robbie Williams' Angel and Feel as well as selection from The Lion King, Ain't No Mountain Too High and Beauty and the Beast.

The Sliema Youth Ensemble will also perform In The Mood by Glenn Miller, Lady Madonna of the Beatles, Minnie The Moocher of the Blues Brothers, California Girls of the Beach Boys and Steve Wonder's Superstition amongst others.

Entrance is by a donation in support of the Culture Performance Hall project by the Sliema Philharmonic Society. Art Competition

Gallery G of Lija is running an art competition to identify new talent.

The competition, entitled New Faces, is open to all and has only one requirement - that the candidate must never have exhibited previously. The artists-to-be will be given the chance to participate in a prestigious exhibition.

Interested persons are to collect applications from Gallery G and to provide a handwritten cv together with a portfolio of between five to 10 works, a selection of sketches and other academic works which will be presented to a panel of judges for short-listing. These are to be handed in by February 2.

Gallery G is situated at 4, Sir Ugo Mifsud Street, Lija and is open to the public between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays and 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Feast Of St Paul's Conversion

Celebrations in connection with the liturgical feast of the Conversion of St Paul start with the veneration of the relic of St Paul followed by Mass and First Pontifical Vespers at the Mdina Cathedral tomorrow at 5.45 p.m.

On Sunday at 8.55 a.m., there will be the celebration of the Lauds followed by a Pontifical Concelebrated Mass at 9.30 a.m. presided over by Archbishop Mgr Paul Cremona. The 11 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at the Carmelites church, in Mdina.

The Second Vespers, the reposition of the relic of St Paul and a Eucharist celebration take place at the cathedral at 5 p.m. Holy Mass will be celebrated at 6 p.m.

Feasts In Malta And Messina

Arnold Cassola, the Maltese Green MP in the Italian Parliament, will be one of the speakers at the presentation of a book by Elina Gugliuzzo on feasts in Malta and in Messina.

The book deals with various issues connected to feasts, including the Vara in Messina, the Purcissjoni of the Valletta feast tal-Pawlini, and the history of carnival in Malta and Messina.

The presentation will be held in Messina on Monday.

Poppy Appeal Fund

The Royal British Legion has raised the sum of Lm7,640.34 through street collections and other fund raising activities during 2006, in aid of the Poppy Appeal Fund.

Ganado Conference

The second Herbert Ganado conference will be held at the Floriana council's offices on Monday at 7 p.m.

It is being organised by Poezijaplus in conjunction with the Floriana council. Albert Ganado will speak about Herbert Ganado's political party while Max Farrugia will speak about Ganado's exile in Uganda during World War II.

Euro Conference For Schools

The training taskforce and the educational committee within the National Euro Changeover Committee have just held a conference for both private and Church-run schools representatives.

The schools were given an overview of the changeover framework and the effects of the changeover on school administration.

Another conference will be held for the same target audience towards the end of February tackling the effects of the changeover from the curricular and academic aspects.

First Aid Courses

St John Ambulance will hold first aid courses in Maltese and English at its headquarters in Valletta.

A course in Maltese will start on February 21 at 6.30 p.m. and will run twice a week every Monday and Wednesday. Two courses in English will start on February 28, one at 9.30 a.m. and another at 6.30 p.m. both running twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday.

Book Of Poetry

Gozitan poet Fr George Mercieca has presented copies of his latest anthology L-Ghanja tac-Cinju (The Swan's Song) to Francis Abela, head of Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex, Victoria.

The poems in the anthology are divided into four sections namely Nature (the natural environment); My Homeland (cultural environment); Contacts (friendship and love); and Faith (feasts and happiness).

Dog Show Winner

Priscilla del Biagio, Ivan Calleja's Alaskan Malamute, has won the Best of Breed award at the Slovenia Ljubliana International Show.

Some 2,000 dogs from around the world competed.

Priscilla has won on four different occasions in Slovenia over the past two years. Mr Calleja, of Sta Venera, will be taking Priscilla to compete at Crufts Dog Show in Birmingham in March and then on to the US for another show.

Gzira Street Closed

Reggie Miller Street, at the stretch from Rue D'Argens to Luqa Briffa Street in Gzira, will be closed to traffic today between 9.30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Traffic will be diverted either towards Belvedere Street or Rudolph or Luqa Briffa streets, Vjal de la Salle and St Albert Street.

Eczema Society

The Malta Eczema Society will hold its annual general meeting at the Catholic Institute in Floriana on Monday at 6.30 p.m.

There will be a video presentation on eczema and a discussion.
