Appreciation - David Spiteri

Ray Farrugia writes:

I got to know David Spiteri in our University years in the late 1970s early 1980s. We followed identical successive architectural courses. Our greatest collaboration arose from the sporting field.

David was a great sportsman who had good athletic and footballing skills. He was a great controller and dribbler of the ball who teased defences with his skilful play. At a time when the University population was below the thousand mark, in my role as sports organiser on campus, I always found great difficulty in securing a full 11 line-up for our architecture team for the inter-faculty league! David was on of the few exceptions.

He was always there ready to actively take part in whichever sporting event. David was a true sportsman and above all a great gentleman.

I have fond memories of David forming part of the University football team in the early 1980s. This was a period when the University team participated in an international universities football tournament in Malta and later travelled to Sicily, Serbia and the UK in reciprocal visits to our tournament guests.

Our experience in Serbia is singled out by all those who formed part of that group as perhaps the most memorable of all. David was in that team that played five games over a one-week period in Belgrade, Nis, Viranje, Novi Sad and Pristuna (Kosovo).

The news of David's sudden passing away saddened me. We have lost a true gentleman of the highest order.

We did not know that morning,
What sorrow that day would bring
The grief and shock was severe
To part with one we love so dear.
No time to bid a last farewell,
No chance to say goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And we'll always wonder why.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you did not go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
Although your smile has gone forever
And your hands we cannot touch
We will never lose the loving memory
Of the one we love so much.

From mummy, Ramon, step-dad Ray and your friends who all miss you so much.
