Comparative Literature Seminar

A special session of the Faculty of Arts' Literature and Comparison Research Seminar Series will be held at Lecture Theatre 1 at the University, Tal-Qroqq, today at 6.30 p.m.

The speaker will be American literary critic Timothy Bahti, who is an author of several seminal works in the sphere of comparative literature.

A translator into English of works by Theodor Adorno, Hans Robert Jauss and Paul de Man, among others, Prof. Bahti has also published extensively on literary historiography, the rapport between literature and philosophy, and the European lyric tradition.

He is a visiting professor at the Faculty of Arts during this month.

In today's seminar on Comparing Comparative Literatures, Prof. Bahti will give an account of the history of the discipline of comparative literature.

He will be examining the conceptual and pedagogic changes in comparative literature over the last several decades.

Canadian Citizenship

Canadian-born Maltese citizens who had to renounce their Canadian citizenship to retain their Maltese one and would now like to regain their Canadian citizenship can contact the Maltese Canadian Association (Gozo) for assistance.

The association said it was aware of the hardships the Canadian-born children of returned Maltese emigrants had to face to renounce their Canadian citizenship.

The association was willing to help these people compile the necessary data to help them regain their Canadian citizenship.

Financial Firm's AGM

The Valletta Fund Management Ltd held its 11th annual general meeting for shareholders of the La Valette Funds SICAV plc at Hilton Malta, in St Julians.

During the meeting, Peter Perotti, general manager of Valletta Fund Management Ltd, announced that La Valette Funds SICAV plc shareholders' funds as at September 30, 2006 stood at £278.20 million, an increase of 22.37 per cent over that registered on September 30, 2005.

At January 31, the combined fund size of the La Valette Funds SICAV plc increased to just above £284.5 million.

New Front Office Manager

Mario Messina has been appointed front office manager at The Victoria Hotel, in Sliema. He will be responsible for the operations of The Victoria and at The Palace, a five-star hotel opening soon on High Street, Sliema.

Quest For Fast Food Jobs

Sixth formers, university students and other job hunters turned up at the annual McDonald's summer recruitment drive just held at the Meridien Phoenicia Hotel, in Floriana.

The fast food firm is about to hire over 150 workers taking its total workforce to 550.

Over the next few weeks these crew members will be taking their positions in eight restaurants. They will form a key part of a food service team responsible for serving 14,000 customers daily, the company said.

First Aid Courses

The Malta Red Cross - First Malta Branch will be holding a basic first aid course on April 2, 3, 12, 17 and 19.

The course is 15 hours long and will be held between 5 and 8 p.m. at the Maria Regina Girls Junior Lyceum, in Blata l-Bajda. The course fee is Lm12.

A certificate valid for three years will be given to those who successfully complete the course.

Gozo Courses

The second course on aspects of Maltese law for business executives will run between April 21 and June 9. Sessions will be held on Saturdays between 9.30 a.m. and noon.

Cinema For Mums

The next Cinemum morning, where mums can be accompanied by their older children, dads and grandparents, will be held on Saturday at the Eden Cinemas.

Encountering Christ seminar
A seminar on Do You Really Desire To Encounter Christ? How, Where And When? will be held at Mount St Joseph Retreat House, in Mosta, on Wednesday between 6 and 8 p.m.

Good Friday exhibition
An exhibition of statues, statuettes, and photographs of processions and celebrations in Spain will be held at the premises of St Mary Society, Parish Square, Mqabba, between Wednesday and April 8. Archbishop Paul Cremona will be welcomed at the Mqabba parish church at 5.30 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a musical programme by the King George V Band in front of the St Mary Society premises, followed by the inauguration and blessing of the display by Mgr Cremona. Entrance is free.

Maundy Thursday prayer book
A booklet called Is-Seba' Vizti Ta' Hamis Ix-Xirka - Siltiet Mill-Erba' Evangelji, Talb, U Riflessjonijiet, has just been published for use during the Maundy Thursday church visits. The 16-pager in colour, was produced by Fr Karm Bezzina and Joe Zammit Ciantar. The booklet sells for 50c from bookshops and a number of churches. It is distributed by Book Distributors Ltd. Easter sweets
The St Paul's Bay local council will be holding an exhibition of Easter sweets between April 2 and 5 at the Day Centre in Il-Parrocca Street. Persons interested in exhibiting their products are requested to register at the local council offices during office hours.

The International Wives Association will be holding an Easter bazaar on Wednesday at Dar L-Emigrant, Castille Place, Valletta starting at 9.30 a.m.

Life-size statues
The Vittoriosa local council will be holding a Holy Week exhibition that includes life-size statues by Clive and Roderick Busuttil. It will be open between 9 a.m. and noon and from 5.30 to 10 p.m. April 2 - 4; between 9 am. and noon and 5.30 p.m. and midnight on Maundy Thursday and between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Good Friday.
