Appreciation - Joseph Magri

Joseph Spiteri writes:

Joseph Magri passed away on March 22 in very much the same manner as he lived his 73 years: peacefully. Unassuming to a fault, his demise, although devastating for his family and close friends, may have not caused any ripples in the wider sense of society. Yet, he is one of society's unsung heroes. His approach to life, and manner of living it, has lessons for us all.

Technically gifted, he applied himself diligently within the Malta Drydocks drawing office, and retired as a leading draughtsman.

So many of his generation, he served an apprenticeship that was to bring him into contact with asbestos, a deadly material that was to stretch its tentacles over a 50-year span and claim him as a victim all these years later.

A gentleman through and through, he was one of that rare breed that had the knack of always making things better for those around him. Maybe a trivial example, but his daughter would say that, when younger, they would never be dismayed when some toy was broken, as papa would always fix it and make it better than it originally was. Later, toys would transform into cars, household objects and life experiences. This skill was never displayed with pomposity or arrogance. Whenever asked for assistance in any matter he would always say: I don't know but I'll try. He always succeeded.

Complementing this humility and trait for making things better, he displayed a saintly patience. In the 30 years I have known him I have never seen him display any signs of anger or intolerance.

Truly, if everyone were like Joe, heaven would be a place on earth. A man of few words but a large heart.

Towards the end of his days, he displayed an almost embarrassing gratitude to the members of his family who assisted him.

In reality, they were only attempting to repay a debt of kindness that could only be irredeemable. Joe was truly a gentleman, he was gentle and he was a true and real man. I am convinced he is already enjoying God's presence, a presence that he abundantly manifested in his days on earth.
