Live streaming of a meeting of the House Social Affairs Committee which was discussing human trafficking continued behind closed doors after a 20 minute suspension this afternoon at the request of the administrator of the Council of Europe secretariat on action against human trafficking (GRETA).

Administrator Carolina Lasendiaz made her request for the meeting to continue behind closed doors because of its confidential nature. She appeared surprised to learn that the meeting was being streamed.

Committee chairman Edwin Vassallo had told the committee that although Malta might be experiencing human trafficking, it was not as exposed as irregular migration.

When the committee had discussed Paceville, Malta's nightlife area, it did not come across any evidence of human trafficking, but this could be present in specific entertainment groups.

Malta also did not have any child trafficking but this situation might change in the future.

Mr Vassallo said he believed that the police were doing their utmost in difficult circumstances because if human trafficking in Malta existed it would be very well organised and one might not immediately notice it.
