Peanuts star Snoopy has proved that every dog has his day, with a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood.

The famous beagle unveiled his star next to that of his creator, the cartoonist Charles Schulz, who debuted the Peanuts comic strip 65 years ago.

Schulz’s son Craig helped to reveal the new landmark and said how proud his father, who died in in 2000, would have been.

“From his humble beginnings back in 1950, when he walked around on all four legs, to the time when he rose to two legs to become the great writer, a flying ace and Snoopy even ended up on the moon, the first beagle on the moon in 1969. He ran for president in 1968 and lost unfortunately, such was the sad news for Snoopy.

“Today, Snoopy, you have made it, nobody is more deserving than Snoopy to have a star on the Walk of Fame, next to my dad’s. My dad would be so honoured. Snoopy, you deserve it and I will give you a dog bone when we get home.”

Snoopy is an accomplished actor, an adept physical comedian, an amazing dancer, an inspiring philosopher and a superstar

Director Paul Feig, best known for his work on comedies Bridesmaids, The Heat and Spy, served as a producer on the new Peanuts movie and paid tribute to his childhood hero at the ceremony.

“This honour is long overdue, Hollywood. There are few people, and especially dogs, on this Walk of Fame who can say they have entertained audiences and made them laugh for 65 years,” he said.

“Snoopy is an accomplished actor, an adept physical comedian, an amazing dancer, an inspiring philosopher and a superstar. Snoopy never speaks real words out loud but he speaks volumes. He voices our inner hopes and dreams and now is part of Hollywood history. Snoopy, we salute you.”

Snoopy and Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie is released in UK cinemas on December 21.
