Addiction to blogs, e-mail, and text messages at the place of work is on the rise and can impact on the performance of employees, Social Policy Minister Michael Farrugia said this morning.

Addressing a seminar on substance misuse and gambling at the place of work, he said these new forms of addiction brought about with the advent if ICT needed to be tackled at an early stage like any other form of dependency.

The event was organised by Sedqa, the national agency against drug, alcohol and gambling abuse to mark the launch of a policy on addictions at the place of work.

The Social Policy Minister spoke on the importance of rehabilitating victims of such addictions, laying emphasis on the need for employers and society in general to give them a second chance.

The agency has been working in this field since 1996, when it launched the Substance Abuse Free Employees Programme. A total 21 entities took part in this programme in the past two years.
