The government is to give tax credits of up to €12,000 to small businesses which upgrade their IT systems to develop e-commerce, IT minister Austin Gatt has announced.

The incentive scheme has been developed in association with the GRTU.

Dr Gatt said at a press conference with GRTU director-general Vince Farrugia that at 89 percent, Malta had the third highest percentage of businesses in the EU which had internet access, but e-commerce was restricted to a few hundreds.

The new scheme is aimed at promoting e-commerce both in business-to business transactions as well as in general trade with customers in Malta and abroad.

The incentive will apply to small and medium sized enterprises and sole traders. Details and application information are available from Malta Enterprise.
