The waste, known as slurry, was photographed in a field near Xlendi on July 27. The Times of Malta sent evidence of the breach to both the agriculture department and the health department, which is responsible for food safety.

The terraced fields above Xlendi also had livestock waste on the surface of the soil, a matter that was also communicated to the health and agricultural authorities.

The health department sent officers based in Gozo to inspect. At first they could not find the first field and the Times of Malta provided them with contacts of residents in Gozo who guided them to the field.
