The Malta U-17 national team opened their commitments in the Elite Round Group 7 of the UEFA Championships with a 2-0 defeat to Slovakia at the Pirelli Stadium at Burton-on-Trent, England, yesterday.

Charlie Scerri's team managed to hold their own for much of the first half but their chances of earning a positive result were dashed when the Slovakians netted two quick goals early in the second half.

The Slovakians broke the stalemate on 52 minutes through an Ivan Schranz goal and they all but sealed the points six minutes later when Oliver Spilar doubled their lead.

In the other match from this group, England beat Sweden 4-0 in Sixfields at Northampton.

Malta will play their second match from the group tomorrow when they face England at the Pirelli Stadium while Sweden face Slovakia at Sixfields.
