The Maltese who travelled abroad in January numbered 763 less than in the same month last year, according to the National Statistics Office.

The NSO said 14,678 people flew to a destination in the EU and a further 2,719 journeyed beyond.

The main decline was in travel to Italy, down by 523, followed by a drop of 146 to Germany. Visitors to the UK went up by 420 and there was an increase of 131 visitors to France.

The majority of Maltese travellers were aged between 25 and 44, followed by travellers in the 45 to 64 age bracket. People in these age groups made up 74 per cent of all outbound trips.

Male passengers accounted for 62 per cent of the total.
