A police inspector has been suspended from the force and is expected to appear in court today on charges of corruption and embezzlement, the Times of Malta has learnt.

The officer, who has been in the police force for a number of years, was investigated in the wake of allegations about his involvement in irregularities. He was stationed in Sliema.

Once the police internal affairs department concluded there was enough evidence to proceed with a criminal case, charges were filed in the court registry and the officer is expected to appear before Magistrate Antonio Vella.

The details surrounding the case are not yet clear, though the charges mention corruption and embezzlement, apart from the officer committing crimes he was duty-bound to prevent.

Several police officers were taken to court over alleged criminal offences over the past months.

In June, police officer Jean-Claude Mangion, 20, from Qrendi, was charged with the involuntary homicide of motorcyclist Clive Brincat, 32, from Floriana.

The accident happened in Triq il-Konvoy ta’ Santa Marija, in Mqabba, on January 10, 2014 at about 5am when the officer was driving to work and was involved in a collision with a Piaggio Runner being driven by.

The officer is being charged with causing Mr Brincat’s death through negligence, damaging the motorcycle, driving his Peugeot 206 negligently and dangerously, speeding and committing a crime he was in duty bound to prevent.

Also in June, rapid intervention unit officers David Camilleri and Mark Tonna were charged with beating a motorist who, they claimed, had assaulted them. The motorist, Jean Paul Aquilina, 24, from Mosta, was cleared of all the charges brought against him in a separate case.

The case against the police officers are still pending.
