Sliema Wanderers struck twice in the second half to see off Vittoriosa Stars 2-0 at the Tedesco Stadium.
The Blues were on top right from the outset but they found the going tough to break a resolute Vittoriosa defence.
Sliema could have taken the lead on 22 minutes when Aboubakar Bello-Osagie played in Stanley Ohawuchi but the Nigerian’s low shot was pushed away by Vella.
Vittoriosa responded with a good opportunity ten minutes from the break when Oscar Guerrero Marcelo Pereira inside the area and the Brazilian anticipated the onrushing Henry Bonello but his effort finished over.
On the restart, Sliema coach Alfonso Greco roped in Trevor Cilia at the expense of Jacob Borg and the moved reaped instant dividends as on 49 minutes Sliema took the lead.
Cilia dispossessed Ramon and sped inside the area before serving Ohawuchi who buried the ball into the net.
Sliema sealed the points on 71 minutes when Bello-Osagie profited from some poor defensive play from Clive Brincat to quickly release Mathias Muchardi and the Argentine placed the ball past Sean Vella, who had replaced the injured Jean-Mathias Vella.
Sliema’s Aboubakar Bello-Osagie was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
