Sliema 1; Mosta 0

Sliema Wanderers needed a Jean Paul Farrugia goal to overcome Mosta 1-0 at the Hibs Stadium this afternoon.

The Wanderers dominated proceedings for much of the first half.

On 17 minutes, Dexter Xuereb’s clearance hit a Sliema defender with the ball falling kindly to the unmarked Farrugia who tried to turn round goalkeeper Omar Borg who deflected the ball to a corner.

Mosta finally threatened on the stroke of half-time. They were awarded a central free-kick and James Brincat’s curling drive was pushed away by goalkeeper Entonjo Elezaj.

Mosta started the second half brightly and on 50 minutes Elezaj again dived full stretch to palm away Adrian Borg’s shot.

But it was Sliema who struck on 59 minutes when Sansone released Gary Muir who quickly picked up Farrugia inside the area who tapped the ball past Omar Borg.

Mosta almost drew level three minutes later when from a James Brincat corner Adrian Borg’s header was cleared off the line by Peter Xuereb.

Seventeen minutes from time, Farrugia released Potezica who sped into the area and his low shot had the better of Omar Borg but Adrian Borg was on hand to clear off the line.

Mosta were unlucky on 85 minutes when Godwin Mensha sped into the area but his low drive came off the upright as Sliema held on for the win.

Sliema striker Jean Paul Farrugia was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
