QORMI 2

Wellington 12, Mansi 44

SLIEMA WANDERERS 3

Muchardi 15, Pearson 22, Muscat 62

Sliema Wanderers re-discovered their winning touch against Qormi to re-ignited their bid for a European berth.

Twelve minutes into the match and with Sliema doing all the running, Qormi cashed in on the Blues’ flat defence when Wellington barged through before planting a rising shot over Timothy Aquilina.

Sliema’s reaction was immediate. Younes Marzouk’s accurate ball floating towards Mark Scerri, who tried an unorthodox scissor-kick but missed the ball completely. In one moment, Matias Muchardi, followed the ball, to stab it into the corner of the net.

The Wanderers’ industry and persistence stepped up and on 22 minutes, Jonathan Pearson connected to a loose ball first-time to blast the ball into the net.

Suddenly, however, Qormi equalised just before half-time. A corner from the left by Manolito Micallef had the ball taking a slight deflection towards the unmarked Davide Mansi whose well-placed header beat Aquilina all the way.

Sliema took up the intiative once again. Qormi could do nothing to prevent Sliema captain, Alex Muscat, from putting his team ahead past the hour mark. He ran inside the goal area to meet an inch-perfect cross from the right before shooting into the net  past a rooted David Cassar.

Sliema Wanderers' Matias Muchardi was named BOV Player of the Match.
