Alan Tabone scored a double as Ħamrun cruised past Senglea to leapfrog Żebbuġ Rangers in second place on goal difference but still five points adrift of leaders Gżira United.

Steve D’Amato’s side played a waiting game and absorbed the pressure as Senglea missed a penalty when trailing 2-0.

Ħamrun drew first blood after six minutes when Jake Grech slotted the ball home from close in after a perfect delivery from Saturday Nanapere.

Senglea tried to hit back and on 19 minutes an Aboubakar Bello Osagie free-kick was half cleared by the Spartans defence and from the rebound Duncan Pisani saw his effort land over the crossbar

On the half hour an Obaje Aud grounder was deflected on to a corner. From the flag-kick Miguel Ciantar hit over the top from just inside the Spartans box.

Edgar Degabriele’s side continued to dictate matters and on 36 minutes a Christian Cassar grounder from the edge of the area was stopped by David Cassar.

However, it was efficient Ħamrun who doubled their lead in added time when Tabone curled the ball in the corner of the net from a free-kick.

Senglea could have reduced the arrears on 52 minutes when Pisani was brought down in the penalty area by Glenn Azzopardi and a penalty was given. However, from the spot-kick Christian Cassar saw his effort saved by the Reds keeper.

Ħamrun almost added a third but Jeffrey Farrugia pulled off a fine save to deny Grech.

However, Tabone put the game to bed on 67 minutes from another free-kick to dash Senglea’s hopes.
