Sir Elton John has confirmed that he and partner David Furnish have been invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

The singer said he would be attending during an appearance on Canadian television.

Sir Elton had said he was not expecting an invite to the wedding despite being a close friend of William’s mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

When interviewed on CTV’s Marilyn Denis Show this week, the singer told the host “As far as I know, I don’t have an invitation”, but when pressed he said “Yeah, we do have an invitation”.

Sir Elton added: “I’ve been trying to be discreet, yeah, we got an invitation.”

Asked if he and Mr Furnish would be joining the other guests at Westminster Abbey on April 29, he replied: “Yeah, I think we will.”

On the 10th anniversary of Diana’s death in 2007, Sir Elton opened and closed a Wembley Stadium concert organised by Prince William and his brother Prince Harry in memory of their mother. But the musician revealed recently that he did not really know the princes.

Sir Elton, 63, famously performed an alternative version of his poignant song Candle In The Wind in honour of Diana at her funeral in 1997, days after she was killed in a Paris car crash.

The entertainer and his civil partner Mr Furnish recently revealed they had become fathers to son Zachary, who was born to a surrogate mother on Christmas Day.

Around 1,900 people will watch Prince William and Ms Middleton exchange their marriage vows, with more than half the guests drawn from the couple’s family and friends. Those on the list have not been officially announced but a number have confirmed they will be attending, including Irish rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll and socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.
