Singer Billy Joel was said to be recovering well yesterday after double hip-replacement surgery.

Claire Mercuri told People magazine the 61-year-old pop star had both hips replaced last week to correct a congenital condition.

She said Mr Joel, behind such hits as Piano Man, Uptown Girl and New York State Of Mind, was “doing extremely well”.

Mr Joel toured this year and was recently promoting the documentary film The Last Play At Shea. There was no word on when he planned to perform on stage again.
