The Medicines Authority acknowledges the concern expressed by Mario C. Ellul of Żejtun regarding lookalike medicines’ packaging (Real Danger Of Confusing Two Different Medicines, December 6). Malta follows European legislation and standards for the regulation of medicinal products.

Under European legislation, it is mandatory for companies to include the product name, the strength of the medicinal product (say, 5mg or 10 mg) and dosage form (like, tablet) on the medicinal product packaging. On the other hand, the legislation does not make it mandatory for companies to make distinctive packaging between the different medicinal products.

Thus, companies are allowed to use their branding on the packaging, including corporate colours and logos. While specific national requirements on packaging can be developed, this is not being recommended at this time because such requirements may affect availability of these medicinal products on the local market.

While highlighting the importance that patients and those who administer medicines to patients should carefully read the information on the packaging and should not rely on the design and colour of the box, the Medicines Authority understands that some patients may have problems with reading information on the packaging. The use of compliance aids such as weekly pill boxes for people who take medicines on a regular basis is recommended as this may reduce the risks associated with taking wrong medicines. Patients should ask their pharmacist or their doctors to help them in case of difficulties with recognising their products.

Information on medicines and their use is available on www.knowyourmedicines.gov.mt or www.maltamedicineslist.com.
