Siemens has been awarded a contract with a total order volume of some €160 million from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to replace and modernise its existing 550 letter sorting systems. The Siemens system currently in operation has been in service for almost 20 years.

The contract provides for the delivery of ancillary equipment, spare parts, training and complete integrated logistics support services. Production and installation is expected to be completed by spring 2011. "We are delighted with the vote of confidence that USPS has given us, continuing our many years of successful co-operation," said Hans-Jörg Grundmann, CEO of Siemens Mobility. "The new equipment plays an important role in mail processing and the new systems will help USPS to further boost its productivity."

The letter sorting system was initially deployed in the early 1990s. The automatic system will use the Siemens Advanced Colour Reader (ACR) to detect and lift the address and other mail piece information for automatic reading. The new technology increases the throughput of the machine and helps to easier maintain the systems. Siemens has several installed basis of letter sorting systems worldwide.

In Malta, Siemens and Midi plc are equal partners in a joint venture, Solutions and Infrastructure Services Ltd (SIS), providing telephony and broadband internet services as well as Building Technologies for the Tigné Point and Manoel Island projects.
