A suspect is in custody after opening fire at the Los Angeles International Airport and injuring multiple people.

Multiple people were hit by gunfire, but their condition is unknown says Los Angeles police Officer Norma Eisenman.

She said officers responded to the incident which occurred at 9:30am in terminal 3.

The suspect exchanged fire with airport police and was taken into custody. The airport is being swept for precautionary measures and the bomb unit is on scene.

Airport staff evacuated travellers and flights were disrupted nationwide.
