Jewellery worth several thousand euro was stolen this morning in a hold-up outside the airport terminal, during which a shot was fired, the police said. No one was injured. 

The incident happened at about 6 a.m. outside the departures lounge.

The police said that a 46-year-old man from Balzan and a 49-year-old man from Naxxar were approached by three hooded men, two of whom were armed.

A shot was fired and the thieves then grabbed a bag being carried by one of the two men and drove off in a light van. The man carrying the bag, a jeweller, had been about to go abroad. 

The van was later found burnt at Triq San Nikola, Kirkop

A magisterial inquiry is under way.
