A Tunisian shopkeeper has become an unexpected hero after he sheltered tourists during the deadly June 26 attack at a beach resort in Sousse.

Asgmi Bubaker's shop in Sousse is just 20 metres away from where police shot dead the gunman in last week's beach resort attack.

He sheltered terrified tourists in his souvenir shop and everyone was safe -- unlike the 38 people who were killed.

"The tourists came by running very fast. 'What's happening? What's happening?' They say there's a terrorist and they have a big problem since their hotel is a bit far from here, a bit far, and maybe this man was following these people to shoot them or something, so I said to those people, come inside," the shopkeeper said.

He then shut the grill gate and they all waited inside until the danger was over.

Though Bubaker and the tourists were unharmed, there's a harsh reminder of what happened, right outside his shop.

His car has bullet holes and the country's tourism industry is in tatters.

Hotels are empty and major British tour operators have temporarily suspended all holiday trips to Tunisia.
