Finance Minister Tonio Fenech was this afternoon reluctant to give details on the outcome of the call for expressions of interest in Malta Shipyards, but said the outcome augured well for the call for tenders, which would be made shortly.

The call for expressions of interest closed yesterday.

Mr Fenech said this was a delicate process and it was not in anybody's interest to give details and numbers.

"What I can say was that we are quite positive. There were calls for every area of interest in the shipyards - the whole facility and the individual units: ship repair, superyachts, yacht repair and the Marsa yard."

He also stressed that these were not formal bids, but expressions of interest.

The process is being handled by the Privatisation Unit.
