As a British Anglican, resident in Malta, may I express my horror and disgust at the shameful conduct of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office over the childish memo which amounted to abuse and insult to the Pope.

Reading releases in the British newspapers it appears that the perpetrator has been clearly identified, that he abused his position to order a junior colleague to e-mail the memo and yet this "un-civil" servant is going to keep his job. There was a time when one could be proud of the British Civil Service and the old Foreign Office was often considered the cream, but it now appears that standards have plummeted to an unprecedented low level.
