A mysterious group says it has blown up several speed cameras on French roads and has demanded money from the state to stop the attacks, police said.

French anti-terrorism services are investigating the previously unknown group, which calls itself the Nationalist Revolutionary Army Faction (FNAR).

A police source said the group had admitted responsibility for attacks on seven speed detectors. He declined to say how much money it wanted to halt its campaign.

French radio station RTL said the FNAR had asked for a significant sum, and had also called for tax cuts and "less repression".

The latest attempted attack happened on Tuesday close to the village of Baillet-en-France north of Paris, police said. The device had not exploded and was defused by explosive experts.
