Heritage Malta will be joining the rest of the world in celebrating World Diabetes Day tomorrow by lighting up the façade of the National Museum of Archaeology in Republic Street Valletta, today and tomorrow.

The museum will be one of landmarks across the world to be lit up in blue as a beacon of hope for the more than 246 million people affected by diabetes worldwide.

More than 65 countries are participating in this campaign, being led by the International Diabetes Federation. Blue is the colour of the federation's logo.

Heritage Malta is participating in the initiative in collaboration with the Medical Diabetes Association, which had sought the agency's assistance on the matter.

The Museum of Archaeology was chosen because of the high-profile exhibition, Caravaggio: l'Immagine Del Divino, which it is hosting.

The UN nominated tomorrow as World Diabetes Day because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea that led to the discovery of insulin in 1921.
