Seven Nigerian couples are to marry in the Catholic Church on Sunday after having converted to Catholicism while in Malta.

All but one were previously Christian but they were baptised in the Catholic Church in Malta last December.

They were previously married by traditional rites abroad.

Their Catholic marriage will take place at the University Chapel in Tal-Qroqq.

Fr Mark Cachia sj from the Jesuit Refugee Service and Fr Alfred Vella from the Malta Emigrants Commission will officiate.

The JRS and the Emigrants Commission said an important part of their mission is to attend to the pastoral needs of those who want to make Malta their new home.

The couples are members of the West African congregation which meets every Sunday at the Jesuit Residence in Msida to celebrate Mass. This community  welcomes Maltese Christians who wish to celebrate their common faith with others.

"These joyful moments help us recognize each other in our common humanity. Whether Maltese or Nigerian, Italian or Somali, we want to share our lives with people we love and who love us back," said Fr Cachia.
