The Sette Giugno monument will be returned to St George’s Square in line with a wish expressed by the majority of the people who took part in a public consultation exercise, the government said.

In a statement, Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi said technical studies have been held to ensure that this was possible.

He said that 64% of the people wanted the monument to be returned to the square, 17 per cent wanted it in front of the new Parliament and 12 per cent wanted it in Republic Square. Other choices included Castille Square, Barrakka Gardens and St Elmo.

The monument had been moved out of St George’s Square for the embellishment of the square and although it had to be returned to its place following the works, it never was.
