A sergeant major caught making "colourful" comments against Nationalist MPs on Facebook will no longer work at parliament after his request to be transferred was accepted by the Police Commissioner.

Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil had yesterday threatened to lead PN MPs out of parliament if no further action was taken against the police officer in question.

Sergeant Major Eugenio Caruana was given a warning by Dr Farrugia last week after he was caught posting "colourful" comments insulting PN MP Claudette Buttigieg on Facebook. The sergeant major had just been promoted and assigned parliamentary duties.

Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil yesterday told the Speaker that a warning did not suffice, that he was obliged to consider MPs' interests first and foremost, and that Dr Farrugia should ask the Police Commissioner to reassign sergeant major Caruana.

Dr Busuttil had said that other Facebook posts had unearthed other disparaging comments the sergeant major had made, targeting PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami as well as Archbishop Charles Scicluna.

In a ruling issued this evening, the Speaker said that sergeant major Caruana had made a formal apology to the parliament in writing and said that he was willing to apologise in person.

He noted that the sergeant major had subsequently asked the police commissioner to be transferred to other duties. The request has been accepted and sergeant major Caruana was no longer part of the police contingent working at parliament, he said.
