Just when she thought that serenades were a thing best left to Romeo and Juliet, Kristina Chetcuti found herself being serenaded by a budding Maltese tenor.
Make way MTV-generation: Classical music is slowly regaining popularity with the young generations. In Malta several are the young singers who are dedicating their lives to their passion for classical music.
Cliff Zammit Stevens, 21, who is currently reading for a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Studies at the coveted Royal College of Music in London says: “It’s growing. Opera is no longer dull and boring. I’m constantly surrounded by people my age, buzzing with love for classical music.”
Despite being still a ‘tender’ tenor Mr Zammit Stevens’ voice vibrates enthrallingly through the music room at St. James Cavalier where today and tomorrow he will be performing a music recital aptly called ‘La Serenata’.
Mr Zammit will be accompanied by soprano Claudia Tabone who has just come back from the prestigious Conservatorio di Musica Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, where she studied under the direction of Giovanna Canetti.
The duo are accompanied by established pianist Rosetta Debattista who was trained at the Royal College of Music by the pianist of Maria Callas himself – Robert Sutherland.
La Serenata will take place at the St. James Cavalier Music Room on August 19 and 21 at 9 p.m.
