This year's Senglea Maritime Festival, held between June 5 and 6, featured a number of exhibitions, re-enactments, displays and a spectacular show - all with a maritime concept.

The event included art, crafts, history, dance, music and art, parades and re-enactments, with a must-see being the Macina - open to the public for the first time and hosting numerous static exhibitions, audio-visual displays, lectures and performances over its three floors.

Among the interesting features were also activities which made guests relive the times of the Knights of the Order of St John and the British Empire. Some re-enactments had the Senglea promenade as a backdrop and focused on themes, such as the Victory Kitchen and the life of the city during the war, as well as historical incidents that shaped Senglea's religious traditions.

A group of Sicilians also showed off their Regatta rowing boat skills and displayed a variety of fresh fish. There were also fishing competitions, abseiling, boat trips and a military vehicles show.

Joseph Vella, the resort's general manager, said the event was a great way for Malta to celebrate its maritime history. Senglea mayor Joseph Casha said the festival, which in the past received the European Destination of Excellence for Aquatic Tourism Award, was also a great way of promoting Malta as a destination for alternative tourism.
