Senglea Athletic boosted their chances of retaining their Premier League status when they held Floriana to a goalless draw.

The match turned out to be a scrappy affair in the first half with only two scoring opportunities of note.

On 34 minutes, Senglea won a free-kick on the edge of the area and Volpini’s inswinger was pushed away by Ini Akpan, the Floriana goalkeeper.

Floriana responded seven minutes later when Maurizio Vella hit a firm drive that was well blocked by Matthew Farrugia.

On 56 minutes, Sebastian Nayar sent a low cross towards Mario Fontanella but the Italian striker just failed to make contact with the ball in front of goal.

Eight minutes later, Cabral picked up a short rebound and his deflected shot just missed the upright.

The match remained evenly tight with Senglea almost catching the Floriana defence napping on 80 minutes when in a swift brace Peter Paul Sammut played in Ivan Paz but his angled drive was blocked by Akpan.
