The lower part of Melita Street, Valletta, in front of the French embassy was closed off today after reports that Gaddafi supporters may hold protests.

Instead, the supporters held a demonstration in front of the Libyan embassy in Balzan, where they shouted slogans against French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mr Sarkozy is seen as one of the strongest supporters of the rebels, having been the first to grant them international recognition. He also pushed for the UN Security Council resolution which authorised the use of force against Libya.

Some 10 policemen were also stationed outside the embassy.
