A low bank of storm clouds approaching Malta from the west on Monday morning can be seen in the picture (right) taken at Mtaħleb shortly before a thunderstorm hit Malta.

The unseasonal weather had been forecast for the Maltese islands and rain and lightning was reported in several parts of the island on Monday morning.

Other parts of the Mediterranean, notably Sardinia, suffered rain flooding on Sunday.

"The wind veered Northwest and increased rapidly from 16.9 km/h (Force 3) to 67.6 km/h (Force 8). In all, 6.1 mm of rain were measured. This amount seems insignificant, but keep in mind that it fell in a few minutes," Andrea Muscat, an administrator of the Gozo weather page explained.
